Robert Irwin Brockett, 83, of Granby, beloved husband for 59 years of Frances Kathleen (Pearson) Brockett, passed away on Sunday, (December 22, 2013) at Hartford Hospital. Born in North Haven on March 29, 1930, son of the late Horace and Mildred Brockett, he was raised in North Haven and had lived in Granby for the last 59 years. After graduating from high school, Robert continued his education at the University of Connecticut and earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering. He started his career at Hamilton Standard and later took a position at Combustion Engineering where he worked for many years in the nuclear program. Robert took early retirement shortly after Combustion Engineering was acquired by ABB, and became an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge, years of experience, and the practical applications of what they were learning with the students. A longtime Granby resident, Robert was an active member of the Granby Grange and had served as the State Grange Chaplain for 16 years. He was also a member of St. Marks Lodge #91 in Granby, (now Valley Lodge #36 in Simsbury), and had served as Master for two terms. Robert was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Granby and had served as a trustee, an auditor, and on many other committees at the church. He also served as a lay person on the Committee on Ministry for the Farmington Valley Association of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert O. Brockett of Granby and William E. Brockett and his wife Tina of Roxbury; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Sanders and her husband Jesse of Millersville, PA; a sister, Anna Lois Schultz of Mokena, IL; four grandchildren, Abigail Sanders, Thomas Sanders, Charles U. Brockett, and Timothy A. Brockett; and 16 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Peter Brockett; and a sister, Molly Carroll. His family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, 4-7 p.m., with a Masonic Service conducted by Valley Lodge #36 at 6:30 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Granby, 219 North Granby Road, Granby. Burial will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery in Sterling, MA. Robert's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Congregational Church of Granby, 219 North Granby Road, Granby, CT 06035.
