Mariam Subbu, 82, of Avon, CT, passed away peacefully in the arms of her son Raj Subbu and daughter-in-law Roopa Subbu on May 10, 2018 after a brief illness. She was smart, determined, courageous, of a very strong character, and decades ahead of her time breaking several social and cultural norms. Born in the small town of Punalur in picturesque Kerala, India, she was the second of nine children of a landowner and expert watchmaker (R. Shahul Hameed - deceased) and his homemaker wife (Asuma Beevi - deceased). At a time when girls were typically married by the age of fourteen and rarely completed high school, Mariam was high spirited and one of the brightest kids in school. At the tender age of 16, she took a train to the big city of Madras (Chennai) where she stayed in a girl’s hostel and put herself through college. She wanted all her siblings to have an education like her’s, and so raised each of her younger siblings in Madras, ensuring that they all got a very good life and education. Not only that, she waited for each of her younger sisters to marry the men she approved of. She further completed her Master’s degree in languages, and for a while served as a Hindi language instructor for Indian government officers. This is how she met, fell in love with, and married a strong willed and intelligent man (A. G. Venkat Subbu - deceased February 2011), and raised three strong willed and successful children. Mariam’s oldest daughter Roshini Bakshi lives in Jakarta, Indonesia with her husband Hemant Bakshi, and their two sons Dhruv and Rahil. Mariam’s second daughter Anu Young lives in Inver Grove Heights, MN with her husband Darren Young, their two sons Jordan and Jaylen, and daughter Jaclyn. Mariam’s son Raj Subbu, Ph.D. lives in Avon, CT with his wife Roopa Subbu, their son Jadon, and daughter Tara. Mariam’s passion forever in life was always her family, especially her husband, kids and grandkids - helping her husband and kids achieve their full potential. She was into natural medicine, organic foods, finding creative ways to invest for financial success, and enjoyed frequent international travel with her husband to be with kids and grandkids. Inter-faith services and funeral is scheduled for Tuesday 5/15 - 11am at the Carmon Funeral Home - 807 Bloomfield Ave, Windsor, CT. Ash burial at sea is planned for Wednesday 5/16 at Narragansett Bay, RI.
