Helen Hudzik Smith passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 9 2018. She was born on August 20, 1926 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the daughter of Jacob and Antonina (Sorota) Hudzik. Helen was the first in her family to graduate from college. She graduated from Lowell Teachers’ College (now part of the University of Massachusetts) with a degree in teaching. She was passionate about her profession, first teaching at the elementary school level in East Hartford, then for many years in Windsor, CT. She enjoyed coming across her former students in town. Even many years later, they would always recognize her and stop to talk. It gave her great pride that she had made a difference in the lives of the children she taught. She met the love of her life, Charles Frederick Smith, at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. He worked in an ice cream shop. She walked in, ordered a cup of coffee ice cream, and he served her the wrong flavor because he was so instantly smitten with her his head was spinning. They adored each other. They spent many happy years together. The last few years of Charles’ life, she was his champion when he had to go into a nursing home. She was by his side constantly, making sure he was treated well until Charles died in 2001. In addition to her parents and her husband, Helen was also predeceased by her son, Robert, who died in infancy, as well as her sisters Blanche Szufnarowski and Stephanie Hudzik and her brother, Walter Hudzik. Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Smith and Giovanni Frisone, of Cromwell, Connecticut and Milan, Italy, and her son and daughter-in-law, C. Lawrence and Jean (Krajewski) Smith of Windsor, Connecticut and Meredith, New Hampshire. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and her grand-dog, Josh. Helen loved to talk, play cards, go to the theatre, and watch UConn women’s basketball. She was delighted she lived long enough to see the Red Sox win a few championships. She was an avid reader, always looking to learn something new. She had character, grace and wisdom! Helen was a generous cook, sharing the delicious results with others. Her excellent golumpki were legendary. Never shy with her opinions, her family has no doubt that Helen is giving all in heaven an ear-full, and that she will find happiness again with her dear Charles.”sciskam mocno”!!
