David M. Bergen, 83, of North Granby, beloved husband of Sarah J. (Mayhew) Bergen, passed away April 3, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Farmington, August 29, 1934, son of the late John and Martha (Pasternak) Bergen; he was raised in Farmington and graduated from Farmington High School in 1952. In 1957, Dave was a private in the Army as a wheeled vehicle mechanic serving oversees until 1959 and received the Good Conduct Medal. From 1959 until 1963, he served in the Army Reserves. An auto mechanic by trade, Dave owned Bergen’s Garage in East Granby with his brother, George, until 1965 when he joined Wagner Ford in Simsbury. He retired as the repair manager in 1999. Dave had an uncanny ability to solve mechanical problems and he put much thought into everything he did. He enjoyed projects, tinkering, dancing, and fixing things and especially taking care of and helping out his family. His greatest joy was spending time with his family; especially his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides his wife of 56 years, he leaves his son; Jeffrey Bergen (Laurel) of Granville, MA, his daughter; Sonia Mason (Tom) of Farmington, his granddaughters; Melissa Phelan (Brian) of CA, Heidi Bergen of Granville, Amelia Mason of RI and Katrina Mason of Farmington, his grandsons; Michael and Matthew Bergen both of Granville, his great-grandchildren, Parker and Meredith Phelan of CA, his brother-in-law, Robert Mayhew of VT, sister-in-laws Marie Batchelder (Arlan) of VT and Sonja Mayhew of Vernon, several nieces and nephews including his niece; Marlene LaMay of Bloomfield, and nephew, Rick Wilmot of CO and his good friends and neighbors, John McKeon of Wolcott and Paul and Barb Doyle of North Granby. Dave was predeceased by his parents, his 10 brothers and sisters; James, John, George, Phillip, Richard, Donald, Betty, Flo, Martha and Mary, his sister-in laws Nollie Page and Kathy Mayhew and brother-in-law, John Mayhew. A graveside service will take place on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 11 am at Granby Cemetery, 6 North Granby Road, Granby, CT 06035.
